Stepped grayscale tests were marked with periodic green-tinged bands at lower intensities. Good black measurements contributed to this result, but DisplayMate ( evaluations with full-screen dark colors revealed bright spots in all corners and particularly in the lower corners. In the lab, the MFM-HT95's factory default "movie" mode delivered an impressive 593:1 contrast ratio. An easily accessible headphone jack on the side of the display was a nice touch. The MFM-HT95's integrated speakers and subwoofer initially sounded a bit tinny, but slightly increasing the bass adjustment resulted in decent sound quality. We noticed, however, that video playback suffered from loss of detail and washed-out colors at angles of 45 degrees or more from all sides. The MFM-HT95 exhibited none of the serious viewing-angle artifacts we encountered with its 17-inch sibling, the SDM-HS75P. Otherwise, you may end up staring at yourself more often than at the content of the screen. The overall effect is darker black levels that make colors look brighter, but the glossy finish of this "clear-coat" technology is best suited for light-controlled environments. The MFM-HT95 uses Sony's XBrite technology to enhance contrast levels.
But the remote lacks a backlight or glow-in-the-dark buttons, making it difficult to use in dimly lit environments. In addition, the remote is easy to operate with one hand and includes buttons for discrete input selection-a practical necessity since switching inputs via the MFM-HT95's on-display controls is painfully slow.
The MFM-HT95's infrared remote control is a simple, yet elegant design that offers a thoughtful button layout with comfortable spacing. Similar to the stand design of Sony's MFM-HT75W and SDM-HS75P displays, the base lacks any height adjustment, and users must physically turn the entire display to adjust the horizontal angle.
